Read of a few things the rider can do to ensure a more comfortable journey for first-time motorcylce passengers.

Much like first time campers, the first experience for motorcycle passengers will likely determine if they will want to try it again in the future. Logically then, it's best for their first experience on a motorcycle to be a good one. Most importantly, they should feel as comfortable as possible on the ride. Having them join you on a shorter trip first makes sense before attempting one of greater distance or difficulty and resulting increased discomfort.

Unfortunately, most motorcycles are not made with the comfort of the passenger as priority, so think of things that will help, such as:

Packing for the comfort of the first-time motorcycle passenger

Care should be taken to pack the gear in a manner that supports the passenger with their comfort in mind. For instance, if the passenger has a backpack, the gear on the back of the bike could be arranged in such a way to support the weight of the backpack. It will also lessen fatigue on the passenger when passing over rough terrain.

If the driver is also riding with a backpack, it may be best if he carries it in front of him to allow more room for his passenger. Of course, this must be done in such a way that the driver can safely and properly manage the bike.

The gear attached to the bike can be wrapped in waterproof protection in case of rain and therefore keep the passenger from getting wet if they are leaning on it.

Having the proper gear available for your passenger

Here are a few ideas for gear that can help to make your passenger feel more comfortable on the ride:

  • raingear
  • Velcro back support
  • gloves (to protect from wind and rain)
  • rain and wind resistant coat and pants

Bike maintenance for the comfort of the passenger

Well-maintained and quality shocks can make a great difference in the comfort of the ride for your passenger.

Remember the comfort of the passenger during the motorcycle trip

  • Communication with the motorcycle passenger during the ride - warn of upcoming bumps and changing road conditions so that the passenger can respond as needed and avoid possible increased discomfort.
  • Take frequent breaks – for stretching, "restroom" breaks, eating, enjoying the view, and picture taking.

Tips that first-time passengers should remember during the motorcycle trip

Have an open mind and enjoy the experience. Part of the fun of riding a motorcycle is the scenery, so enjoy taking it in and try not to focus too much on any little thing that may be a distraction in the way of discomfort.

Keeping these tips in mind will ensure that your passenger can feel as comfortable as possible while enjoying their first experience on a motorcycle.
